In May 2018, the San Francisco Bay Area experienced an unprecedented surge in whale deaths. Over the course of a single month, multiple gray, fin, and blue whales were found washed ashore or floating in local waters. Investigations determined that several of the deaths were caused by human activity, including collisions with large ships and entanglement in fishing gear.
