Hundreds Protested Trump Travel Ban at Sacramento International Airport

Hundreds of demonstrators gathered at Sacramento International Airport (SMF) on January 29, 2017, to protest President Donald Trump’s executive order restricting entry into the United States for citizens of seven predominantly Muslim countries. Protesters occupied Terminal B, chanting “Refugees are welcome here!” and opposing the immigration ban.

According to “Slavic Sacramento”, between 300 and 500 people participated in the peaceful demonstration. Protesters included members of local communities, civil rights advocates, immigration activists, and area residents who joined a nationwide wave of airport protests across the United States.

Despite widespread detentions of travelers at several major airports around the country, no passengers were detained at Sacramento International Airport. Local media noted that the airport primarily serves flights to and from Mexico, reducing the immediate impact of the executive order on passenger traffic.

The Sacramento protest was part of a nationwide movement against Executive Order 13769, signed by Trump in late January 2017. The order temporarily restricted entry for citizens of several countries and sparked extensive public and legal debate across the nation.
